Weekly Update from the #NWAChampionship

New: Additional viewing decks added to enhance spectator experience

Community: Drive, Chip & Putt Qualifier to take place Sunday before tournament

Competition: Olympic hopeful Candy Hannemann secures second Sponsor’s Exemption

With just one event left on the LPGA Tour schedule before the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G, tournament officials announced today improvements to the on-course spectator experience, a Drive, Chip & Putt qualifier event for local youth, and the recipient of its second and final Sponsor Exemption. Once again the world’s best female golfers will return to Pinnacle Country Club, Rogers June 22-28. Tickets remain on sale at

NEW: Tournament expands viewing decks throughout Pinnacle Country Club

In an ongoing effort to enhance the on-site spectator experience at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G, new and expanded viewing decks and seating will be added for general spectators at the 2015 tournament. These new spaces will be located on holes #1, #9, #17 and #18.

“The experience of our general spectators is very important to us,” said Harry Hardy, Tournament Director. “Kimberly-Clark stepped up their sponsorship this year in a bid to make these new viewing areas possible and for that we are grateful. Our spectators are going to enjoy watching the world’s best female golfers from these new vantage points found throughout the course.”

On the front nine, viewing space on the 1st Tee has doubled with stadium seating on two sides of the tee box. The 9th hole, a popular viewing spot for spectators annually, now features a Kimberly-Clark Viewing Deck with views of the green and approach shots. On the back nine, the 17th Hole now features three different options for general spectators, offering different vantage points throughout the hole. The Kimberly-Clark Viewing Deck and the BallPark Fan Pavilion will offer open-air seating, while the Filtrete Cooling Zone will be an enclosed, air conditioned space for general spectators. On the 18th hole, spectators will find a wrap-around viewing deck, giving general spectators an excellent view of the entire 18th hole.

COMMUNITY:  Area youth to compete at Drive, Chip & Putt Qualifier on tournament grounds

Drive, Chip & Putt will host a qualifier event at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers on June 21. Bringing this youth golf development initiative to NW Arkansas was made possible by a partnership between Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G, The First Tee of NWA and Pinnacle Country Club, and gives participants the chance to earn an invitation to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club. The closest qualifying location previously was Tulsa.

In only its third year, the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship will provide playing opportunities throughout all 50 states for boys and girls ages 7-15, who will compete in separate divisions in four age categories. Top performers at the local level will advance through sub-regional and regional qualifiers with the top 80 performers overall—40 boys and 40 girls—earning an invitation to the National Finals at Augusta National on Sunday, April 3, the eve of the 2016 Masters.

Registration for the Drive, Chip & Putt Qualifier is now open at

COMPETITION: LPGA Veteran Candy Hannemann to play at NW Arkansas Championship

The Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G has announced its second and final Sponsor’s Exemption recipient. Candy Hannemann, an LPGA tour professional from 2004 to 2008, will join the 144-player field at the tournament June 26-28.  The Rio de Janiero, Brazil native and mother of two has returned to golf in hopes of competing in the 2016 Olympics.

“I want to play in the Olympics in 2016 because it is in my hometown [Rio de Janeiro] and my home country [Brazil],” said Hannemann. “It is the only reason why I am coming back. I was happy being home with the kids and working here and there, but this is the one main goal that has brought me back to golf.”

As the host country, Brazil will receive one golfer in the Olympic field, which will be selected based on the golfers’ Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. Hannemann is currently unranked and is number 407 on the LPGA priority list. She hopes to bolster her ranking by securing sponsor exemption invites into LPGA events. The Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G will be Hannemann’s second appearance in an LPGA event since 2008.

Cancer Challenge Receives $100,000 Contribution From Tournament

Gift represents largest ever for Cancer Challenge

ROGERS, AR (JUNE 27, 2013) – In honor of its 20th anniversary this week, the Cancer Challenge is receiving a $100,000 contribution from the recently completed Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G.  The gift represents the largest contribution ever received by the organization.

According to Tina Waggener, executive director of the Cancer Challenge, given the size of the gift the organization's Board of Directors will now begin considering how best to apply the contribution toward one or more of the organization's key focus areas.  These focus areas include preventive education, treatment, navigation and social services, and survivorship.

"On behalf of the Cancer Challenge we are thrilled to accept this gift from the tournament,” said Tina Waggener, Executive Director of The Cancer Challenge. “Many more lives will be touched here in Northwest Arkansas as a result of this generosity.  The tournament has become one of the jewels in our community, and their commitment to improving the quality of life here for all our citizens is commendable."

In addition to receiving this contribution, the Cancer Challenge also joined the tournament and P&G in driving awareness and donor participation in the Pantene Beautiful Links program which helps provide free wigs to women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment including women in Northwest Arkansas.  This program culminates in a special hair donor event held annually during LPGA week in Northwest Arkansas.  At this year's event on June 19 at the John Q. Hammons convention center in Rogers, 344 people donated their hair toward this cause, more than double the donors from the previous year.

The 20th Cancer Challenge event takes place June 27-29 in Northwest Arkansas and consists of golf and tennis tournaments, a trap shoot, a run-walk, and the Sparkle and Spurs gala.

"The Cancer Challenge has been doing important work in Northwest Arkansas for 20 years now, and as part of our charitable outreach this year we wanted to do something of significance to support the organization's mission and outreach in this community," said Jay Allen, Tournament Chairman.

Allen added that as part of this year's tournament, charitable contributions and product donations totaling $135,000 have been made to numerous organizations throughout Northwest Arkansas, increasing the charitable impact the tournament has made in the community since its inaugural event seven years ago.

Local organizations that will be benefitting from the tournament this year include: the Cancer Challenge, the Benton County and Fayetteville Boys & Girls Clubs, the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank, the Mercy Foundation, and the South Central Golf Foundation.  In addition to these organizations, the Walmart Foundation as part of LPGA week made a $25,000 grant to Dress for Success to establish a local affiliate and also made an additional $475,000 grant to Dress for Success to fund 15 Dress for Success Career Centers across the U.S.

The Cancer Challenge is a non-profit organization serving the Northwest Arkansas community for 20 years.  To date the organization has invested more than $10 million in local cancer services and programs serving more than 280,000 people in this community.

Inbee Park Wins in a Dramatic Playoff

ROGERS, AR (JUNE 23, 2013) – Rolex World Rankings No. 1 Inbee Park (69-65-67=201) won the 2013 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G in a dramatic finish, defeating 2012 Rookie of the Year So Yeon Ryu in a one-hole playoff. With five birdies in the final round, Park overcame a four-shot deficit on Sunday to secure her fifth victory of the season at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers.

The leader board stayed tight all day, and Park birdied three consecutive holes on the front nine to move into contention.  With the birdie on 18, Park looked to have her fifth victory of the season locked in, until Ryu also birdied 18 to force a playoff. Park and Ryu played their playoff on the 18 hole, and Park sunk a four-foot birdie putt for the win after a 30-yard chip. With her eighth career victory, Park added $300,000 to her career earnings, moving her total to over $6.7 million.

“It feels great,” Park said. “This is one of my favorite stops.  People are just so nice here, and the course was in great condition this year.  The greens were rolling very pure,  so I was able to putt really well on this golf course and play very solid last three days and, yeah, I mean holed a lot of putts and it was just a little tough day.  I had to play playoff with best friend, but, yeah, that's got to happen sometime.”

While the Seoul, South Korea native Park is accustomed to winning on the LPGA Tour, with two major victories and two other tournament wins this season, being four-behind the leaders put less pressure on her heading into the final round.

“I mean there was a lot of leaders at 10-under and coming from behind that takes a lot of pressure off of me,” Park said. “That takes pressure off of everybody when they finish before everybody and, you know, just try to post a number before everybody and just waiting and see what happens.  I think, yeah, I prefer to play a couple groups in front, yeah.  I mean, I have a lot of tournaments that I won that I came from behind.  So I think this was one of them.”

Local favorite and former University of Arkansas Razorback Stacy Lewis, who entered the day tied for lead with Beatriz Recari, shot par in the final round, to finish 9-under (67-65-71=203) and in fifth place. While Lewis had her sights on winning, the love from the hometown crowd gave her motivation throughout the weekend.

“Seventeen was so cool,” Lewis said. “I had been waiting for it to get loud like that the last few years and it was awesome today.  18 was pretty cool, too.  It gives me goose bumps even thinking about it.  You can't ask for more.  I finished top 5 and still played pretty decent today.”

Dress for Success Receives Donation Totaling $500,000

Today, the Walmart Foundation presented a $475,000 grant to support Dress for Success Worldwide’s Paving the Way Forward program. This grant supports Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative and will fund 15 Dress for Success Career Centers across the U.S., allowing them to build capacity in their training programs and serve more clients through increased operating hours.

The Foundation is also presenting a $25,000 grant to the newly founded Dress for Success Northwest Arkansas affiliate. This grant will help the affiliate get off the ground and support women in the local community. The local affiliate will be having a clothing sorting volunteer event after the presentation.
