Jiyai Shin, the defending P&G NW Arkansas Championship winner, won the Evian Masters Presented by Societe Generale on Sunday. Shin sank a biridie putt on the 18th hole to break a four-way tie with Morgan Pressel, Alexis Thompson and Na Yeon Choi. The win was the seventh of Shin's career on the LPGA Tour and her first this season. With the victory, Shin took over the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Rankings Monday morning.
Shin entered the final round two srokes behind playing partner, Pressel. Playing in the last group, Shin made biridies on Nos. 4, 5 and 8 to post a three-under par 33 at the turn. Shin birdied No. 13 before making pars on Nos. 14, 15, 16 and 16, Shin, putting first, made her fifth birdie of the day on 18. Pressel narrowly missed a biride putt that would have forced a playoff.
The 15-year old Thompson, who turned pro earlier this year, narrowly missed becoming the youngest LPGA event winner in history. Thompson finished tied for second after shooting a final-round 5-under par 67. She finished the tournament at 13-under 275. Thompson will play in the P&G NW Arkansas Championship in September as a sponsor exemption.
